Treasurer’s Report – Brew Off netted ~ $800, bar and food costs were on the high side, we may be able to economize there in the future.
FEB – OFFICER ELECTIONS – The same officers remain, uncontested.
Brew-Off 2018 – This year’s comp at Buffalo Creek Brewing went well. Plenty of judges and good sized flights, which had been a challenge in previous years and a very nice space. Thanks to Mike Marr for hosting us.
Maltster Collaboration – Duffin Station Malt ( duffinstation.com/about/ ) offered malt to members to brew to be evaluated at the April meeting. Initial comments included that the efficiency was generally low, as this is an under-modified floor-malted process. Will this provide a unique flavor to the more common highly modified grains we have been using? Bring your taste buds to the April meeting to compare. Members of other area brew clubs will be joining us for this tasting.
Brew-Off 2019 – Looking for a fall time frame, so will be ~ 18 months between comps, as we can’t really ask the same sponsors again in the same calendar year. We also need to review the ratio of medals to entries with the smaller flights in order to qualify towards the Midwest Home-brewer of the Year rankings. Looking towards ~ 150 entry limit. Maybe provide home-cooked pork shoulder to reduce costs? Separate Mead/Cider Comp? – Some discussion regarding holding a separate Mead/Cider Competition – this would be a small and manageable comp, and should be easier to get judges, without conflicts between beer/cider/mead judging. Also considering web-based “Reggie” (reggiebeer.com) for the registration/competition tracking software.
April 7th Beer Trip – We will meeting at Maproom 1:30, Piece at 3:00 and Maplewood ~ 4:30. Maproom is close to the Clybourn Metra station. Some taking the North Line will be meeting first at Lake Bluff Brewing. The club will pay for any Uber rides we need.
Barrels – The 55 Gallon has gone sour, not looking to refill it at this point. A 15 G whiskey is open, and we are considering purchasing a 30 gallon Bourbon Barrel ( $120?).
Grain Group Buy – Being co-ordinated through Perfect Brewing, follow the forum for details and a product list and prices ( add 1.75% tax). Orders must be in by 4/23.
Great Taste 2018 – Dan B is coordinating. Have a bus lined up, looking at $90/member for ticket and bus. Follow the forum for updates.
GABF 2018 – Mike H has rooms to rent in a 3 BR home with 8 person capacity. Helping with tear-down can earn you free tickets for next year’s event (or possibly for this year – TBD).
Club Wear buys are in process – We have Crewneck, T-shirts, Hoodie, and Work Shirt styles. Get your order info/size into Chris B in April.
Web Site updates – Mike H has set up a Google Gallery for our pics. Send Mike any recipes you’d like to share.
